I’m a sucker for a hot, alpha protector type and the strong woman who may or may not need protecting. Marcus and Missy fit the bill perfectly. Marcus is second-in-command at the shadowy Hidden Justice, an organization that hunts down human traffickers and exterminates them. When he finds the emaciated Melissa during his latest raid, he knows it’s a game changer for him. And of course, nothing is as it seems with Missy. I loved this couple, and I loved their love!

We met Marcus Gallo in The Boss and he is a huge, hotheaded and intense guy. He is now the leader of the team since Matteo has left to enjoy his life with Evie. He misses his friend and is finding the move up from second in command to being the boss harder than he thought. He has chosen his own small team and they have built up a reputation of successful missions but then blowing up the buildings they raid.
Matteo is a hard act to follow and I found it funny that Marcus is oblivious to what is happening to him just like his boss was. During one of their raids something bothers him and it is his insistence that leads him to finding a young woman bound up and locked in a cage. From the moment he sees her the instinct to protect and care for her is strong and undeniable.
Melissa ‘Missy” Evans is strong, determined and fighter who has suffered an immense trauma and horrors. She knows he is older and more experienced but he makes her feel safe. I liked how she could hold her own amongst these men. She talks back, is headstrong and challenges Marcus to show she is an independent woman. It turns out there is more to her than he realised.
Their banter is funny and she is so good at pushing his buttons. She affects him and he doesn’t understand why. Marcus fights the temptation to take their relationship any further but starts to feel it is fate throwing them together because he had gone with his gut instincts on all aspects of the raid which saved her. It was amusing how protective Marcus was of Missy and reminded me of how Matteo was over Evie, so he was following in Matteo’s footsteps in more ways than one.
Poor Marcus is so surprised by his reaction to this tiny woman because the pull to her is strange and intense. He has hidden his feelings for years so will not let Missy change that even though for some reason she calms him. Although he is stubborn and controlling, I was impressed with how they always ended up talking everything through. I loved his scowls and sexy threats especially when he turns all caveman on her. My heart went out to him when he has doubts and wonders if she reacting to him because he rescued her as he knows deep down she can do better than him.
As she recovers, the team find out there is more to her abduction than they first thought and the twists and turns are fascinating as they try and work out who and what is behind it all. The build up to all the answers is exciting and I didn’t solve some of the mysteries which really pleased me.
Again the details of the team’s work is vague but Missy does give an idea of what happens when the girls are taken. Fantastic ending, totally out of the blue and brings all the facets of the case together. Lovely epilogue and it was fun seeing Matteo, Evie and the other couples on the island.
At the end of this book I was so delighted to read the sneak peak of The Commander and see we were going to get Julian’s story next. He was in the background in The Boss but a character that stood out to me in this book. He was great and provided some very funny moments especially when regularly calming Marcus down. I loved his reluctant acceptance of what was happening with Marcus and how shocked he was it happening again just like Matteo!

Missy Evans find it hard to trust after the ultimate betrayal that lands her as a victim.
“No one can protect her the way I can. Nothing or no one is going to touch her while I’m around.”
Second in Command is Book two in the Men of Hidden Justice series. It can be read as a standalone but The Boss is so good you really don’t want to skip that. And I definitely can’t wait for Julian’s story!!!

Marcus was second-in-command under Matteo and is now the one in charge of the team since Matteo retired to an island with his love.
The team raids a warehouse, bringing down more of the bad guys and saving the women they're holding. Before blowing the building, they discover one more woman being held in a cage behind a wall. Chained, emaciated, hurt...Marcus is drawn to this woman. He carries her out and stays with and keeps watch over her himself.

Her name is Melissa. Missy. And she proceeds to show him she isn't some cringing violet. He may have rescued her, but she is far stronger in spirit than he expects.
He finds himself under her spell. They may find themselves falling in love, but she is not some doormat waiting for help. She is determined to play a role in bringing down the bad guy.
Marcus has his work cut out for him if he doesn't realize and accept the Missy is not a sit on the sidelines and wait kind of woman.
Their clashes are intense and often steamy.
The final showdown is epic. As is their HEA.
Absolutely adored these two!

I am going to out myself: When Marcus appeared in The Boss, I was one of the many fangirls who asked - okay scratch that - begged that we get a Marcus story. I didn't care what it was - this man intrigued me. And did he ever break out the alpha-growly ways. He is not interested nor actively looking for his soulmate. Yet this slip of a woman basically slips in under his skin and he cannot let go.
"Matteo would howl in amusement if he saw me now."
Yup Marcus you are done for with Missy.
Let's talk Missy. Strong heroines seem to be a love or hate with romance readers. They need to be soft but not doormats according to some. Then there is this one. By what she suffered, she should be a broken doll. Missy has this underlying strength that she is going to write her own ending. She is badass without being a bitch. I basically have a big ol' girl crush on her that makes her a memorable character when fellow bookworms need a book pushed on them.
This is romantic suspense with page-turning scenes, steams up your glasses from your kindle caught on fire with the chemistry and two unforgettable main characters. I love this side of romantic suspense that Melanie Moreland is bringing to readers.
Definitely a - BUY THIS recommendation from me.
