This duet is a little ...
This duet is a little darker than what I've come to expect from Melanie Moreland, but it's as well written, as pull-you-in-and-hold-on-tight interesting, and as full of great characters that I always expect from this author. She never disappoints, which is why she's an auto-read for me, regardless of trope.
Now, take an already terrific story and put it in the hands of John Lane and Maxine Mitchell. These narrators are so good, and they prove that once again with this book. John Lane captures Roman's seriousness perfectly, and Maxine Mitchell brings out everything I imagined for Effie.
Whether you read or listen, Roman and the Men of the Falls duet are a must.

Effie is the soft place for Roman to land but never a push over. Her life has been upended and trying to find her way. But when pushed, that spine shows up!
If you are all about the protective, he falls first for the noble cinderella, look no further. I spent time in this world because I never wanted it to end.

Roman is all business in the beginning doing what he does best, and that happens to be collecting a debt owed the casino. The person who owes the money, a woman with zero conscience and zero morals. When she tries to sell him something she has no right offering and he finds disgusting he throws her out with a deadline and a warning.
Just so happens that not too long after on a visit to his Nonna he passes her sister's diner and decides to stop in. He is stunned when he meets Effie she is the complete opposite of her sister in every possible way. And he is fascinated.
Lucky for him and unlucky for her (well maybe just the reason they end up spending so much time together) spending a lot of time together will teach them both a great deal about not just each other but also things they've been missing.
Luca makes more appearances in this book. VI and Aldo also return from their honeymoon and add some great comedic relief.
There is some action, a little suspense and danger and of course one sassy Nonna.
I have voluntarily left this review.

Roman owns two casinos and is part of the syndicate. He has watched his brother Luca and best friend Aldo find love and now they are both happily married. He doesn’t do relationships and is positive he is incapable of love. One day a slip of the tongue while angry with a gambler who owns him lots of money leads to a series of events with devastating consequences. His world is turned upside down the moment he comes face to face with Effie Warner. Effie is a petite woman who works hard at her diner, Bagels and Bites. She is shocked when a mystery man visits, mentions her sister and then leaves his contact details. When danger comes knocking on her door, she hopes that some how he can help her. Roman is captivated by the innocent woman and her unusual eyes. He feels guilty at what his words have caused because to him family is everything. He has destroyed her world and needs to make amends.
She has experienced a horrific event but has she now a new kidnapper. Can she cope with living in his world. I laughed so much when he no idea how to deal with his Little Tiger. She becomes all he thinks about and makes him do things he has never done before. He hates he needs and wants her. He is cross he has caught feelings as they are changing him and he has never felt these emotions before. This totally amuses Aldo and Vi, who think she is actually perfect for him.
It was lovely how she sees the parts of Roman he keeps hidden from the world. It was funny when he was affectionate and goes all caveman on her. I loved how good she was at talking to him and makes him question all his thoughts and ideas. She is great at calming him but also talks back at him, especially when she tries to stand up to him. The connection between them leads to some really amazing moments and the unbridled passion between them just oozes off the pages. She shows such strength when he comes up with an idea that will keep her safe. Roman is happy to take care of her, protect her and give her anything she wants but can’t give her his love.Effie wonders if they will ever have a future or if it is all fake and pretend. Can she change his outlook on life and would he ever return her love. It was lovely how patient she is and cleverly teaches him to love. Will he ever figure out what they are? Ghosts from the past are determined they won’t get a HEA so will all the revelations and secrets destroy them? When a deadly situation threatens, I was so pleased when he has a light bulb moment.
I was so pleased to see how happy Aldo and Vi still were. Aldo is just brillant and his humming and teasing cracked me up. I loved all his heartfelt comments to try and make Roman see sense. Vi and Nonna were great with Effie and they all knew she suits him and strangely he suits her. Do read the cut chapter, it is hilarious and Aldo and Vi yet again steal the show. I was so pleased Connor found his redemption and all Nonna’s wishes come true with all the good news. I have loved this world and feel sad it is the end for these guys as this duet has been wonderful.

Roman is the owner of his own hotel and casino with another being built, where he launders money from some of his less pleasant business dealings. He's not a man to be messed with, crossing Roman is like signing your own death warrant, he is feared for a very good reason! He loves his family with a passion - brother Luca, his best friend and right hand man Aldo, both their wives and his Nonna - he is fiercely loyal and protective of them. But love for him is not on the cards, never has been, even though his Nonna wants nothing more than to see his married with his own children, he feels he is incapable of loving a woman.
Effie has put everything she has into running her own little bakery/diner business using the money her mother left her. Her business is her everything. She is innocent in the ways of men, but has a good business head on her! The man in the impeccable suit in her diner gives her shivers, everything about him screams danger and predator! But he is the one who turns out to be her saviour when the unthinkable happens with her sister!
I love Effie - she might look small and weak, but she is a wonderfully strong character and super smart! Roman is lost when it comes to Effie, he can't get her out of his head and he doesn't know why, and it annoys the hell out of him! Effie can see the real Roman underneath all his layers, how loving and protective he is towards the ones that matter to him. For a man incapable of love, he does so much for Effie! She pushes his buttons and stands up to him, something he is not used to, he likes her fire but it also gets under his skin!
Aldo and his wife Violet appear quite a lot in here, learning more about these two was wonderful, Violet is a force to be reconned with and she took Effie under her wing and became fab friends. Great to see all the banter and ribbing between these four!
A fantastic duet, loved the dark or at least morally grey characters and world she has created here, maybe we can revisit at another time?
