I really needed a feel-good, hilarious book to get lost in when I started reading this one, and true to form, Melanie Moreland delivered. With every release, I have a new favorite, so I'll just say I love this book and its characters. The story pulled me right in and made for a wonderful bit of escape from everyday life.
I always count on John Lane and Maxine Mitchell to give wonderful performances, so it was no surprise that I thoroughly enjoyed the listen of My Favorite Boss. Whether it was antics or funny banter or a bit of swoony and sexy or anything in between, Lane and Mitchell bring these characters right out of the book and into your head. I had the pleasure of reading the book and then listening, and I've gotta say that no matter which medium you choose, you won't be sorry.

Author Melanie Moreland’s My Favorite Boss is one of the funniest books I’ve ever read! This authors use of humor shines through each and every page.
From Magnolia’s interview with the dreaded Alexander Bane to the big discussion Magnolia had with Bane’s mother, you will find tongue in cheek, tongue on tongue, tongue’s tangling and some of that good ‘ole kneeslapping humour everyone needs now and again.
Alexander Bane, he has his ways of doing things and he is always right, mind you he is the only one who agrees with himself. So when Magnolia Myers flew out of the elevator and fell down he had no choice but to catch her. He was organized she was a mess…he had rules…so did she and they didn’t always agree whose rules were better. But there was something about her, something that made him smile. He could be handled, she was ready to take this bull of a man on.
Magnolia was just what Bane needed, not just at work though..he needed her. He didn’t know it yet, but he needed her. She was the one who opened his eyes to so many things. She needed him, she needed his strength and he always had her back. For all the comedy there will tears. Tears for the first man in Magnolia’s life…her father. Bane had her back when it came to her dad as well.
Their chemistry was so hot I couldn’t understand why the paper in the storage room didn’t burn! Oh bring on the fans or turn on the A/C because “it’s getting hot in here”
There will be snort laughs, there will be tears of laughter and there will be a ball of feline shenanigans who you will fall in love with at first mention.
My Favorite Boss is on my top ten reads for 2024, five star all the way and that’s just ‘’FINE”

Alexander has gone through six assistants in two months. He works hard and expects them to work harder! He ends up having a bet with HR to interview and hire the next one, never expecting his last choice to end up the best. Magnolia is running late but is determined to get the job. She
flies into the office, crashes into her new boss and starts the series of events that turns his life upside down. He knows employing her is a bad idea but can’t resist her.
To Magnolia her boss is handsome, confident but very intimidating especially with his eyebrow lifts. He is passionate about his work as a landscape architect and is a hard taskmaster but
she just knows he’s been waiting for her !! She expertly organises his office, calendar and even makes his lunch. She puts him in his place with great comebacks and her notebook. From the start he makes her feel safe and cared for but is the bane of her working life.
He immediately falls for this sexy, curvy woman, who is completely different from anyone he has ever known. He is enchanted by her quirky sense of dress and fascinated by her sassy attitude. She is sweet, shy but very accident prone which leads to numerous hilarious incidents. He wants her but knows it would be an HR disaster plus he doesn’t date or do relationships, however, she turns out to be perfect for him both at work and at home.
The temptation for both of them gets harder to ignore but will they be able to keep their professional and personal lives separate? It was clever how the author developed the characters depending on the circumstances and I loved how neither knew who they were dealing with each day. Usually it was Mr Bane and Ms Myers at work, then Alex and Magnolia out of the office but the lines start to blur and finally she was just Maggie Darling to him.
I really enjoyed how Magnolia drives him crazy, makes him laugh with some of her antics and brings out his protective side. How she deals with his mother is fantastic. She knows she’s falling for her grumpy boss but worried if he will ever love her like she loves him? It was lovely seeing him slowly open up to her and start to wonder how he ever managed without her in all aspects of his life. His mother has made him feel unlovable so could he ever love Magnolia?
There are so many hilarious encounters and incidents both in the office and outside work but just be prepared for the ‘lumberjack-hunting’ and bridal shower party bag. Add in some mean girls, the adorable Rylee and poor Jessica who always arrives at the wrong time. Alex’s best friend Sam, the doctor, is amazing and so insightful and gives Alex such good advice. Then to cap it off we get the star of the story, ‘Hedgy’, it was lovely how he taught Alex so much without him realising.
Bane is her favourite boss and she’s his favourite assistant and this is one of my favourite books of the year. The epilogues as usual bring the story to a wonderful conclusion. I fully recommend settling down and enjoying this romcom. You will fall in love with both characters as quickly as they fell for each other. It’s amazing what being kind and caring can accomplish.

First, I am all for the alphahole boss trope. Give me a grumpy, overachieving, perfectionist and knock him on his head over heels in love ass - I am there for it. And Alexander Bane fits the brief. He is the perfect crusty hard cinnamon roll and ONLY for her. He doesn't get soft for anyone else (except begrudgingly Hedgy).
Next, give me a hyper competent, not backing down but wears her heart on her sleeve heroine - and I am there for it. Magnolia Myers was the relatable heroine that everyone can see a piece of yourself in. She wants to do a good job - no a great job. She wants to be her own person - seen in her wardrobe that is where her heart also shines brightly. She loves deeply, and genuinely cares about those inher charge - including her grumpy boss.
The banter is hilarious. There were times I hyperventilated. They fight the chemistry but when they give in, WOO BOY.
I've read the ebook, read the paperback I've just finished the audiobook. While I know some will eyeroll, I won't re-read every version because it's my job - but because this was the escape to watching love bloom and a happily ever after I want delivered in my romance books.
Once again, Melanie Moreland has blown me away with her storytelling. Leaving a place for real heart and emotion that doesn't get lost in the laughter. If I could give this story 10 stars I would.
FTC rules require I disclose that I am contractor for Moreland Books Inc. I am her cover designer and this aint AI art -but beautifully hand drawn art from a talented illustrator. I am her PA and gal Friday. I am her friend. But my biggest role is I am a genuine fan - and those who know me best know I wouldn't be the other if I didn't really love her storytelling.

This must be one of the funniest books I've ever read. I laughed so hard, kicked my feet, giggled, blushed, and cried through this book. Melanie Moreland has outdone herself once again. Just when I thought I had her writing style figured out, she surprised me yet again. From the start, I knew I would love this book with Alexander Bane and Magnolia Myers and their undeniable chemistry.
"My new assistant is an unwelcome distraction. Snarky, witty, always smiling. She constantly puts me in my place, making me second-guess my decisions. I intensely dislike it—unless I'm kissing her. Then Magnolia Myers becomes my favorite person, which I hate."
Maggie's sassiness shines as she proves she's not intimidated by him and can match him step for step, all while being an exceptional assistant. She makes Bane's coffee, eases his office life, and deals with his troublesome mother. They always manage to find themselves in compromising situations, much to HR's dismay. I couldn't help but cackle. Love Hedgy. There were so many unexpected elements, and in true Melanie Moreland fashion, she had me reaching for tissues. I also listened to the audiobook on Audible, narrated by John Lane and Maxine Mitchell—you simply can't go wrong. This book is a laugh-out-loud, emotional roller coaster.
