Synopsis

Far back as I can recall, not a day exists when I haven’t loved Helena Williams. In my younger years, my love for her was more familial or akin to friendship. But as the years passed, something changed between us. The unrequited love I had for my sister’s best friend was reciprocated. Like the seasons, our love fluctuated. Like the moon, some nights were dark and cold while others were bright and warm.

I loved her.

I love her.

Nine years ago, I broke in two. She said goodbye, and I tried to let her go. She moved on and I did unthinkable things.

With her gone, I fell apart. I let the darkness take over. Let myself drown. The dark was familiar. Comforting. Guaranteed. Constant.

But now, I am ready to breathe again.

Behind the book

As someone who has lived more than 30 years with depression, I've wanted to write a character who deals with depression since my first book. But it was important for me to not assign such a significant mental health situation to just any character.

If you're new to my work, majority of my stories have broken people—some more than others. Regardless how much I wanted to write a character with mental health issues, I didn't want to do it with just any character. That character needed to speak to me early on and let me see that side of them.

I have two characters that experienced depression or depression-like thoughts or tendencies—Devlyn in the Artist Duet and Anderson in Every Thought Taken. Though Devlyn has dark moods and reactions, it is wholly different from what Anderson has experienced throughout his life.

Anderson always felt like a forgotten shadow—around his family and peers. He is the odd loner that is bullied for not fitting in with others. He is the child looked down upon by one parent while the other parent agrees to not disturb the peace. Those aren't the sole reasons for his depression, but they do deepen the darker thoughts and self-loathing.

But with despair comes hope.

In Every Thought Taken, I wanted to show that there is hope in a dark world. That finding the one person who will stand by your side through every bad and good day exists. That love is possible for someone who feels alone and lost.
