“Don’t give me that look!” She scowled back at him.

“What look? What did I do now?”

The woman folded both arms over her chest, and her mouth thinned.  “I’m not a total heathen.”

“Maybe you’re a little touchy. That might be a possibility. We’ve got six weeks’ worth of work here at least. Lighten up. I’m not judging you.”

“Right. All your kind does is judge people,” she mumbled, as she turned her head to the side.

They were close to the river. Matt reached out to grab the sleeve of her jacket. “Now who’s the one making a judgment call? Lay off, and let’s try to get along here. Your grandma and my friend are depending on us. Let’s call a truce, and work to get a good harvest. We won’t have time to pick at one another. It’s a waste of energy.”

Her cheeks flushed, and she tried to evade him. Matt tilted her chin up and stared into the sour face of the woman he wanted to hug. “Come on, give me a break. Have I said one word to you about God or Jesus?”

With a shake of her head, Alice Ann pushed his hand away. “No. But, you’re thinking it.”

“My mind has a direct readout on my forehead, like a cell phone. That’s how you know what I’m thinking?”

Color flooded her cheeks anew, and Alice Ann looked down at the tops of her rubber boots. “No.”

“Would it surprise you to know I think you’re a beautiful girl, but you need to smile more?”

The frown left her face, and her lips parted a little in surprise. And at that moment, Matt saw a kernel of sweetness deep within the woman. The sight drew him as nothing else ever had.

Then, she shut him out again. Dark eyes narrowed, and her mouth thinned. Alice Ann, the wounded adult, closed down over the little girl with the slight smile. Matt was sorry to see her go. He prayed there was a way to get the other Alice Ann back.

He wanted to hold her, protect her. At that instant, a dark cloud covered the sun. A shiver slid up his backbone, and in the neighborhood of his heart, a chill took hold. Matt looked up at the sky. A front had suddenly moved in, transforming the sky into a murky gray.

Glancing back at Alice Ann, he nodded. “Come on. It’s time to get going. Maybe this will blow over.”

She jerked her sleeve out of his fingers and took off, head down. Matt followed behind her, without another word. And he had the strangest feeling looking after the woman was his destiny.

Something was after her. Two words from Ephesians 6:12 came to him, spiritual wickedness. The sky got darker. Physical wickedness always seemed to follow the spiritual stuff. Matt lengthened his stride to catch up with her. He needed to stay close to Alice Ann.
