“Let’s take the Jeep.”
“My car gets better gas mileage.”
Her backpack wasn’t as heavy as he thought it might be. They both traveled light. All he had to do was transfer his go bag to the car if he couldn’t convince her to take the Jeep. “I’m paying the gas, What’s the big deal?”
“It hasn’t been out of the garage for weeks.”
“That’s all? How about we drive it next week?”
“Only if I get to drive.”
He turned on his heel and walked over to the Jeep. “No problem. You get to drive next week, I can sit back and nap.” Teller opened the door behind the passenger seat, tossed the bag in and turned to Ruby with a smile. “You should have said something sooner. I don’t have a problem riding shotgun.”
A lift of her chin telegraphed a smart remark coming his way. He already had a few of her mannerisms catalogued. When she toyed with the end of her braid, Ruby had something on her mind and wasn’t sure what to say. He liked watching her. The woman didn’t have many affectations. He noticed the same thing about his mother. Neither of them pulled the coy little moves designed to make a man physically aware of a willing body.
There had been enough of that from the girls hanging out in the bars off base. Lily Raven and Ruby went about their business and didn’t ask to be treated differently than the men they were with. He surprised Ruby by taking the backpack and carrying it down for her.
For an instant, her face held a hint of confusion. When the lightbulb in her head went off that he was trying to be a gentleman, she got a hint of dusky rose on her high cheekbones. Taking her by surprise didn’t happen often, so when it did, he made the most of it. He’d held on to the bag while they debated on which vehicle to take.
A tiny spark of wickedness in him hoped they could put the back seat of the Jeep down and maybe find some place to fool around a little. If this was a get-away to ease tension and stress, he had one idea guaranteed to turn them to mush. Teller doubted he could win Ruby over as easily as he’d convinced her to take the Jeep to Seward. So far, she’d proven to have a mind of her own and a strong will.
He checked the mileage from Anchorage to Seward on Google. He had a few hours to work on the woman. With the two of them alone on the drive, he might make some headway. “I suppose we should turn in. I don’t want to be totally exhausted when we start out tomorrow. I checked and it should take about two and a half hours.” Her fingers caressed the handrail as she stood at the foot of the stairs. Watching didn’t help his libido one bit.
Ruby laughed. A huge belly laugh, she let go of the rail and put both arms over her stomach.
“What’s so funny?”
“Y… you.” Her hand went back on the rail as she strove to regain control. After a few small snorts, she grinned at him and shook her head. “Bet you googled it, right?”
“Yeah, so, why is that funny?”
“You’ll find out tomorrow as soon as we reach Potter Marsh. I’d advise you get a good rest. And if you decide you can’t hack the drive, I can take over.” She hurried up the stairs. He followed with a shake of his head. Tomorrow, he’d ask Bea or Zach, the accountant, about the drive to Seward. For damn sure he wasn’t about to ask Ruby. He’d missed something and meant to find out what.
