Synopsis

Riley Thorn and her hot, tattooed, private investigator boyfriend are all moved in to their new fixer-upper. Not only do they finally have their own place, they also haven’t found any new dead bodies on the premises.

Yep. It looks like summer is over and so is Riley’s bad luck. Or is it?

While Nick gives up sleeping and showering to obsess over the cold case that still haunts him, his business partner Mrs. Penny is calling the investigative shots. It’s every bit as bad as you can imagine.

Meanwhile, Riley has her hands full fixing up the crumbling crime scene they call home and setting boundaries with the breaking-and-entering octogenarians next door. You know. Normal stuff.

But normal comes to a screeching halt when our favorite psychic is abducted by a stranger with candy, and her powers go on the fritz. To make matters worse, it becomes clear that Riley’s new house guests are definitely either in trouble or are trouble after bad guys deliver a warning with a severed finger.

Can Nick and Riley solve the case the old-fashioned way before they all end up in pieces? Or will a surprise birthday party, a dog doody bandit, an accidental arson, and a blast from the past be too much for them to handle?

I fall in love even more with each book in this series. 😍

In book three we've got some of our old friends and some new.

Riley's private-investigator boyfriend, Nick Santiago of Santiago Private Investigation's, has a new lead on a cold case that was never solved when he was on the force and now he eats, drinks and hardly ever sleeps, at least not in his own bed with Riley, because he needs to find out what has happened to Beth, who is also his old partners sister.

As Nick gets wrapped up in that case, while he's turning down other work that would actually bring in money, ...

As Nick gets wrapped up in that case, while he's turning down other work that would actually bring in money, Riley's powers go on the fritz.

Add on top of that that they purchased a run down home in need of repairs, and Nick Santiago has a to-do list as long as the state he's living in.

The octagarians are as funny as ever with their secret code words and shenanigans.

Misses Penney steals the scenes with the doggy doody bandit case she has taken on.

My favorite chapter involves a flamethrower and a bully who finally meets his match when the girls get involved.

I look forward to the next book in this series, if Lucy Score will grace us with another. 😀

I started this book thinking I would take my time and read just a few chapters (since Lucy writes such girthy books!), but then I started that game of “just one more chapter” until I pretty much finished it in a night. It was just that good and unputdownable.

I started this book thinking I would take my time and read just a few chapters (since Lucy writes such girthy books!), but then I started that game of “just one more chapter” until I pretty much finished it in a night. It was just that good and unputdownable.

The latest for this zany cast of characters, we have Nick who is now obsessed with finding Beth who he had thought was dead, which causes an intervention by the other staff of Nick’s PI agency. In retaliation, Nick hands out the ridiculous-sounding cases that were provided by none other than his self-appointed business partner, Mrs. Penny. They all take the cases seriously, but with a dash of hilarity, they all conclude with some surprising results.

For Riley, she has a lot on her plate, on top of putting together a surprise birthday party for Nick, and babysitting Mrs. Penny, she is also getting worried about him and his obsession. Even though Nick is not asking for her help in finding Beth, she is taking it upon herself to do it anyway, while having her own primo case from Mrs. Penny. This plan takes us all on a comedic journey that includes a kidnapping from a stranger that may not be one, a bully and a fire, to a Halloween/birthday party where we had some very enthusiastic, giggling men. It was non-stop laugh-out-loud moments!

Besides all the hilarity, there is the mystery surrounding this stranger who may not be a stranger, causing more chaos, including Riley getting the psychic flu, getting served with a severed finger, and another kidnapping. But in the end, they all come together and have a satisfying end. I am so looking forward to the next adventure!

This is my favorite Riley Thorn book so far! Every time I thought what I just read was my favorite part, and then I read the next bit, and that became my favorite part! And on and on it went. The pacing was perfect, the mystery was mysterious, the new characters and reveal of Bethame was everything I’d hoped it would be. Beth is a complex character! I loved that what I assumed was happening or about to happen wasn’t what was going on at all. I love being surprised by a book. I loved that Riley embraced her gift and gained confidence in her psychic ability, with the help of Gab...

I loved that Riley embraced her gift and gained confidence in her psychic ability, with the help of Gabe, of course. And let’s not forget Mrs. Penny and her “primo” cases that lent a hilarious thread throughout the whole book. I couldn’t ask for more from a book!
