Chapter 1

Screams of pain tortured her and drove her burning legs forward. She was running through the forest, her feet making soft thumping noises on the hard-packed soil as she fought to go faster. They were behind her, back in the house. That house of evil. How she wished she could leave it all behind her, but her legs were wearying, and she had nowhere to go and no one to welcome her. No family but the one from which she ran.

The night was dark. The trees that surrounded her blocked the rays of the moon that would have lit her path. But this wasn’t a problem for Sophy because darkness had welcomed her as family since her birth. There was nothing in the dark that she could not see. The blackest pit of a mountain could not hide its secrets from her. She could go so far as to warp the light around her, creating darkness where there was none. Her brother and father didn’t have her peculiar gifts. They were her own and they were her secret.

The sounds faded with distance till there was only the steady muffled thump of her feet and her ragged breathing. The thinning of the trees and a sharp pain in her side had her slowing to a stop. Soft light from the full moon washed over the meadow that stretched ahead, but she dared not enter it. To leave the forest that surrounded her house would have been tantamount to rebellion, and the men in her life did not tolerate rebellion. Curling up against the sturdy trunk of an oak, Sophy stared into the moonlit distance and tried to forget what had happened, tried to keep her despair in check.

The night helped calm her as nothing else could. She stretched out her arm into the moon’s pure light and watched her skin glow like a pearl—a pearl luminescence that her father had called pale and sickly. Where was her mother? What was she doing at this moment? Did she think of Sophy as often as Sophy thought of her? Old tears pricked at her eyes, but she tucked her arm against the warmth of her body and focused on the calming night.
