I glance at the clock again, just as the doorbell sound. “Good timing,” I shout as I rush to the door. “You’d forget your own head if it wasn’t attached…”
Pulling the door open, I’m confronted by two uniformed police officers. “Oh…” I feel my heartbeat pick up a pace. “...can I help you?”

“Are you Mrs Serena Tate?”

“Yes, that’s me.” I note the patrol car outside my gate. “I’m Serena!” Terror swells deep within me. “Is anything wrong?”

They hold up their identification.

“I’m PC George Luck, and this is my colleague PC Alistair O’Donnell.” After scrutinising their identification to confirm they are who he says they are, I hold my breath, not ready to hear whatever is coming. “Are you married to a Mr Jamie Tate?”

“Yes, I am.” I detect the tremor in my voice.

“Could we come in for a moment?”

“Erm, yes.” I stand aside and gesture for them to step inside. “First door on the left, please make yourself comfortable.”

“Thank you,” PC Luck says as both walk past me and into the living room.

“Just give me one moment to turn the food off.” I know I've already done it, but I dash into the kitchen anyway and take the opportunity to grab my phone from the table. Hitting redial, I’m relieved when the call connects. “Come on, Jamie,” I urge, my voice barely a whisper. “Answer the bloody phone.” Panic rises as I hear his familiar voicemail greeting and not him. I wait impatiently for the beep and speak. “Hiya, love, it’s only me, just checking you’re okay? Call me as soon as you get this message, please.”
