Behind the book

Author notes may contatain spoilers

One of the things I love about writing a long series is watching relationships change.

Ember entered Reg’s life as a hatchling in her garden — small enough to be a companion, a complication, and sometimes a very dangerous pet. But dragons don’t stay small, and love doesn’t freeze them at the age we first met them.

The Hidden Hoard of Drakuntsee grew out of a simple question: what does Reg do when Ember needs something she can’t give him — other dragons, a community of his own, a real understanding of what he’s becoming?

That emotional thread ended up tangled with another one that’s been running through the series for a while. Theodore now lives inside the Theodex, where old magical knowledge collides with the modern internet. A search that once meant a dusty library and an ancient map now means wading through corrupted data, unreliable sources, and a created intelligence trying to tell useful information from interference.

Reg is caught between two kinds of responsibility. She wants to protect Ember, but protecting him can’t mean keeping him close forever. She wants to protect Theodore, but she can’t fully control the digital world he moves through. Both relationships ask her to trust beings she loves while still facing up to the dangers they’re walking into.

What comes out of it is a magical quest — dragons, maps, a hidden grimoire, uneasy alliances, and Starlight deciding for himself whether he even wants to be part of it.

At its heart, this book is about belonging. And about the harder truth underneath that: sometimes caring for someone means helping them move toward a life that takes them farther from you.
