David Evans had built an empire from nothing, clawing his way up from the dirt until he stood at the top, looking down on the world. Power was his currency. Control was his drug.
And yet, tonight, as he poured himself a drink in his penthouse, something felt off.
It started with a knock.
Sharp. Deliberate. Too late for visitors.
David frowned. He wasn’t expecting anyone. His security should have stopped whoever it was long before they reached his door. He strode across the room, drink in hand, irritation burning in his gut.
When he pulled open the door, the last person he ever expected to see stood before him.
Selene.
His soon-to-be-ex-wife.
David’s lips curled in distaste. What the hell was she doing here?
She shouldn’t have been able to get past the lobby, let alone up to his floor. But there she was, standing before him, looking wrong.
Not polished. Not cold and entitled, the way she always had been.
She looked... disheveled.
Like she hadn’t slept in days.
Like she’d seen something she couldn’t unsee.
His irritation shifted to suspicion.
“What do you want?” he asked, voice sharp.
Selene’s breath hitched. She looked over her shoulder, down the empty hallway, before stepping inside without permission.
David clenched his jaw. “I didn’t invite you in.”
She turned to face him, her eyes wild. “I had no choice.”
Something in her tone made the hairs on the back of his neck rise.
David exhaled slowly, controlling his temper. He wasn’t in the mood for games.
“If this is about the divorce, you can save your breath—”
“It’s not,” she interrupted. Her hands trembled at her sides. “David... I think I’m being watched.”
His patience snapped. “Not my problem.”
She took a shaky step forward. “I mean it. There’s a woman.”
David’s jaw tensed. “A woman?”
Selene nodded quickly. “I keep seeing her. Everywhere. Outside my house, at the cafe, when I leave work. But when I look away, she’s gone. And the worst part?” She exhaled, a haunted sound. “She looks exactly like me.”
David stilled.
He hadn’t expected that.
Selene swallowed hard, her voice barely above a whisper.
“She stands at my door, David. Every night. Just standing there. Watching me.”
David studied her, searching for signs of deception. Selene was many things—a liar, a manipulator—but she wasn’t the type to break down like this.
Still, this was absurd.
“You’re being paranoid,” he said, though something cold settled in his chest.
Selene shook her head violently. “No. It’s real. I see her. And... she knows things.”
David narrowed his eyes. “What things?”
Selene’s breath came quicker now, her eyes darting to the window, to the door, as if afraid to even say it.
Then she whispered the words that would change everything.
“She knows what you did.”
David’s blood froze.
His grip tightened around his glass.
And from somewhere outside the penthouse, in the darkness beyond the city lights—
A knock sounded on the door.
Selene’s face drained of color.
David turned slowly, staring at the door.
And then—
The knock came again.
Harder this time.
Deliberate.
Waiting.
