Jade stared at the man she thought she’d never see again.
Ash stood in the doorway of her studio, soaked from the rain, eyes darker than she remembered—and somehow, impossibly, still beautiful.
She hadn’t seen him in five years.
Not since the night they made the pact.
Not since the night they left something behind in the dark.
“Jade,” he said, his voice quieter than she expected, almost unsure.
Her heart thudded painfully.
“You can’t be here,” she said, backing up instinctively, the old panic already flaring in her chest.
Ash stepped inside anyway.
She laughed bitterly. “You made your choice five years ago.”
“I kept the pact,” he said. “You’re the one who broke it.”
“What are you talking about?”
He pulled something from the inside of his jacket—a folded paper. Her handwriting. The pact they signed. A copy she burned.
“I know what you did, Jade,” he whispered. “And now… so does someone else.”
Before she could respond, a buzz came from her phone.
“Time’s up. The pact doesn’t protect you anymore.”
