What was a hired companion? The term usually referred to those serving an older woman, providing her with company, entertainment, household supervision, or any assistance she might want. In exchange, a woman of genteel birth was given room and board and perhaps an “allowance.”
It doesn't sound ideal, but what was a girl to do? A Regency gentlewoman who reached her mid-twenties without a husband faced an uncertain future if she had no income of her own. Caring family might take in a poor relation, but an uncaring family could make the poor relation into an unpaid servant.
