The icy ocean air whips my hair back, and I frantically brush it aside so I can see in front of me as the large boat I’m steering slices through the choppy water. 

 

The darkness seems impenetrable and goes on forever. The horizon is only a slightly lighter black. I check the compass. I’m heading in the right direction.

 

But it’s taking too long.

 

The clock is ticking.

 

I’m going to be too late.

 

And I’m going to lose everything.

 

I tamp down the dread and anxiety and fear. I concentrate on the rage. My fury will fuel me, whereas my worry will knock my legs out from under me if I let it gain the upper hand.

 

What I don’t think about is people I love dying horrific deaths.

 

I only think about the revenge I’m going to wreak upon every last person who put me in this situation. 

 

If I survive this, they will wish they were dead when I show up.
