Synopsis
Sixty years after the Final War smashed Western civilization, in the evergreen forests of what had once been northwestern California, a noble to the manor born met a slave with a quick mind and kind heart - and their love changed a culture. Neither Eliza Cronin, head of the foremost house in the village of Scotia, nor Aaron, the manager she'd purchased at auction in the local marketplace, expected that their meeting would turn into romance, and then revolution. But it had, and everyone was feeling the aftershocks.
In less than two years, the emotional climate of the region had changed. Slavery was being quickly phased out. Raids on outlying communities were replaced by treaties of mutual assistance and defense. Trade was thriving, and couples were marrying left and right as what one wag called “the season of love” washed over Scotia and the surrounding area. For everyone except the few old enough to remember life before the War, things had never been better.
And maybe it was too good to last. Now a massive army from the Chimas, one of the local First Nations, is marching south with the war cry “on to Scotia!” The Scotians have no idea why – they had no designs on the Chimas' land or goods – and neither do the other area tribes. All Eliza and Aaron know is that war is coming, whether they like it or not ... and that they may be forced to risk everything they have to protect their community - and each other - from the approaching storm.
