★★★★★P.D. Workman is an incredibly versatile writer. No matter which of her books I read I am drawn into a great story and honestly, I don't think I've followed another author that could go from cozy mystery to YA to a PI series dealing with mental health issues. Really enjoy her books!

A quick and engaging read that takes us into the depths of a National Park in Canada. A seeming copycat murder drags Detective Parks Pat out of her comfort zone while also dragging her family (daughter and dog) into the fray. A fierce momma bear, Margie puts two and two together to solve this whodunit with few clues at hand.

We get a tour of Glenbow Park and a bit of a history lesson on top. All in all a satisfying read that leaves you happy and looking forward to the next book.

Long Climb to the Top is the second book in the Parks Pat Series. Margie and her daughter Christina have begun to settle in, learning their routines, finding their way about the community, and making new friends. They’ve already
met fellow walkers neighbors Oscar and Milo on their walks, and they are excited to spend time with Margie’s Grandfather, Moushoom.
But then Marjorie is called to take another murder case even though she is not up next on the roster. This time, the murder takes place in Glenbow Ranch Provincial Park, which is farther away. And they say that it's the same m.o.and there's a possibility it might be the same killer although the first killer was found and is being kept in jail, so it's obviousl not the first killer. She goes to Glenbow Ranch to investigate and finds that this body has been stabbed much like the first victim.
The beauty of these stories lies in the background of the characters. Ms Workman brings us into the lives of the First People, who are the indigenous people, and how they fit into society. It’s a view into their world and how they live in ours. Traditions, social customs, and some bits and pieces of their language are interspersed throughout the book. It lends a layer of authenticity to the story that I found very interesting. Each book brings us more information about the parks in the Calgary area, as well as a closer look into the Metis lifestyle.

Detective Pat returns with a “copy-cat” mystery. Another man is found knifed in a Calgary Park. This time the park is Glenbow Ranch Provincial Park. As Pat works on solving this mystery, things at home seem to be off. Great story and characters.

Murder in the Park: Long Climb to the Top and other beautiful murder settings

Behind the book

When I decided that I was going to be writing about murders in Calgary area parks, I knew that one of them would be the Glenbow Ranch Provincial Park. I have been involved in this park since before it was a park. I was legal assistant to the lawyer for the Harvie family, who provided the land for the park. We worked with the family for a number of years and worked with multiple levels of government to get everything lined up and the park created. We helped with the build-out of the park trails and amenities, the establishment of the stewards to help to take care of the park, and much more. In the ten years since the park was opened, I have been involved in a number of roles. I don’t get out to the park as much as I would like to, but it is definitely a special place for me and had to be one of the settings that a Parks Pat Mystery would take place in.
