Next morning, I could still feel a migraine on the outskirts, but it wasn’t here yet. I could probably manage work and, with a glimmer of luck, I’d manage to ward it off for good. I dressed in a black turtleneck and skirt, knee-high black boots, and I wore my new pendant. As I brushed my hair back behind a sparkling blue headband and put on my makeup, I decided that forty-three was shaping up to be a good year.
Killian was buttering English muffins, and he pointed to a plate with sausage patties on it. “Did you want a sausage breakfast sandwich?”
“Two if we have enough.”
He shook his head. “Sorry, we have to go grocery shopping. I found enough muffins for two sandwiches. I can use bread, if you want—”
“Nope, don’t sweat it. I can get a second on the way to work,” I said as an alert told me someone had texted me. I glanced at the screen. It was from Tad.
HEY, CAN YOU COME IN NOW? WE HAVE AN EMERGENCY—DON’T WORRY, BUT IT IS URGENT. GET HERE ASAP, IF YOU WOULD. I’LL PROVIDE BREAKFAST.
ON MY WAY, I texted back.
“Listen, I have to go. I’ll grab breakfast at the office. See you tonight, love. Please feed the cats before you go!” I plastered a quick kiss on Killian’s cheek and headed for the car, trying to navigate the ice and a thin layer of snow that had fallen. As I put the car into gear and eased out of the driveway, I wondered what the hell could have happened. ...
