Tevy lifted his carry-sack onto his shoulder and waved to everyone, stepping away. Before he entered the woods, he turned for one last look at the village gathered to see him off. The village where he’d spent his whole life. His safe place. Tears streamed down his face now, too. Still, he plastered a Tevy smile on his face and waved one more time before turning to walk down the path.

Be safe, Erianth mind-spoke in the way they could with each other. He would miss that once he got too far away to hear her. He would miss her voice.

I will.

He stopped at the Remembrance Fields, squatting down beside his brother’s marker. “Take care of them, Uja. Take care of her.”

He stood, gazing around at all the markers, all the people who had sacrificed themselves for humanity’s sake, and bowed his head in homage. Then, with nothing left to keep him, he strode out of New Hope, around Valor Lake, then turned northwest, having decided sometime during the night that was the direction to follow.
