PROLOGUE

Taegar thrust her hands into the stream of light that emanated from the floor. Power infused her. Strong, heady power. This was what she wanted. This was her destiny. Boundless power. She swelled with it, let it lift her from the ground as she consumed it like sacred sustenance. She floated there, almost incorporeal, awash in Earth’s awen, the magic she coveted beyond anything else.

Regretfully, Taegar removed her hand. While stronger than the magic in her cave, the magic here seemed stifled as well. Until she possessed the complete rune set, she must remain patient. That talisman, designed to keep her from magic rightfully hers, must be found. Her golden eyes brightened as she glared at the stones. So many, yet so few. Several were missing, held by her enemy, Rianthe Royan. Daughter to those who’d scorned her all those years ago.

The overland trip to this cave, her first travel of any kind in many, many years, had depleted most of her power. So little remained of her body—the one she’d been born with more than one hundred and twenty years ago—that she could only move with the aid of magic. But the risk had worked in her favor, for she was born anew in this place that Damian and Valena Royan thought to hide from her. There could be no hiding. As soon as she ripped the remaining runes from that girl’s lifeless body and released the limitless magic Earth had hidden away, she would bind it to herself for all time. She would be unbeatable.
