He picked up his tablet and slid it into his bag. As he leaned over, he brushed back a loose strand of hair and tucked it behind his ear. He’d let it grow out recently and his face looked thinner, as if he’d lost weight. Jake wondered if something was wrong. When he stood up from the table, Jake looked closer at him and decided he didn’t think Cooper looked well.

 

“Jake, would you mind walking outside with me for a moment? I have something I’d like to discuss with you.” After Jake and DeeDee stood up, Cooper gave DeeDee a polite hug. “I’ll talk to you soon,” he promised. “I’m looking forward to seeing what you find.”

 

“I’ll do my best. Take care, Cooper. Now it’s time for me to clean up the kitchen, my least favorite part of cooking,” DeeDee said with a smile. She knew she wouldn’t be able to relax until the leftovers were put away and the dirty dishes were started in the dishwasher.

 

As Jake and Cooper walked to the front door, DeeDee began to hum a happy tune while she began cleaning up, thinking about her soon-to-be restaurant.  Jake opened the door for Cooper and saw one of Cooper’s security team sitting on their front porch, and it surprised him.

 

“Do we live in a bad area?” he asked, eyebrows raised. He’d never known Cooper to have one of his people stand guard like that before. Had Jake known, he would have invited the security man inside. It felt rude to make someone sit on the front porch like a guard dog. But even so, it made Jake look up and down their street in case he’d missed something that had been obvious to the others.

 

Cooper continued down the porch steps and chuckled. “No, that’s not it at all,” he said. His security man stood up as they passed by him, then he followed behind them at a discreet distance.

 

“That’s why I wanted to talk to you out here. I think I may have a problem. They’re just helping me keep an eye out.” He stopped in the middle of the sidewalk and turned to face Jake.

 

Jake stopped short. “A problem?” he echoed.

“Yes, I’m getting a feeling that someone is, shall we say, trying to ruin my life. Whoever it is seems to be working hard to make my life and business affairs difficult for me. It could be nothing or it could be something, but things keep happening that I don’t think are random. Would you be willing to meet with me so we can talk more about this?”
