It was the last meeting of the reading group before Christmas. Grace had been tempted not to go. She wasn’t sure if she could cope with sitting in the cozy, festively decorated snug listening to her friends chat about the forthcoming celebrations when she knew that Christmas in their house was cancelled.

‘Go,’ Ben had said. ‘It’ll take your mind off stuff.’

She had looked into his face, saw the concern for her there and nodded. ‘If you’re sure you don’t mind? What are you going to do?’

‘What I usually do on a Thursday evening. Watch MasterChef, stop the boys from killing each other.’ He kissed her nose. ‘Go. It’ll do you good to see the girls.’

So here she was. The front door of Serena’s house was partly open, spilling a wedge of light out into the night. In fact, it looked as though every light in the house was on, certainly in all the rooms that overlooked the drive, upstairs and down. In the lounge the huge tree twinkled with silver lights and fake frost glittered at the corners of the windows, the whole place looked like something from a. . .
