Student/Teacher A story of courage and integrity for adult and young adult readers alike
Hank Butler thought his 31st year as a teacher at an overcrowded, underfunded public high school would be his last. Burned out and aiming to quit the classroom, Hank hopes to become the school's next principal, a challenge that will require him to kiss up to a corrupt school board.
Carmen Velasquez is a student in Hank's freshman English class. The daughter of green-card immigrants, Carmen has been burdened with the responsibility of caring for her ailing grandmother, leaving Carmen lonely and disconnected from her former friends.
But when an unconventional student teacher arrives, everything changes for both Hank and Carmen. The new arrival is a former military officer named Ms. Meachum, and her unorthodox approach to learning and instruction will alter the world on both sides of the teacher's desk. Meachum helps Carmen connect with her classmates by teaching her the power of teamwork and the necessity of sacrifice. At the same time, she offers Hank a lesson in honor and integrity.
