The sun crept over the eastern horizon, giving birth to a new day. A gentle breeze ruffled the tall prairie grasses like ripples upon the river. He inhaled deeply. He would miss the tranquility that mornings had brought him these past ten years.

Morning was the best time of day. Before the rest of the world woke, one could contemplate one’s reason for living that day. In those brief glorious moments, Beauregard Kennedy always knew being on the Double K alongside his brothers was his place.

But like the seasons, things change—and so had the Double K. He was the odd man out with no wife or children to call his own. No one’s fault but his own. He even regretted it at times. This was one of those times.

Gulping down the last of his coffee, Beau took one last look at his and his brothers’ land stretched out along the horizon then returned to his small, lonely cabin to pack the rest of his few belongings into his saddlebag. He’d never expected to resume the business of chasing outlaws, but when word from his old friend William Pinkerton came, he couldn’t turn his back on the trouble.

Now that his brothers were settled, there really wasn’t room for him on the Double K any longer. It was time for him to get on with life; he’d been scratching that itch far too long.

Beau took a final look around his silent cabin then walked back out to where his brothers waited for him.

“You aren’t going to make this easy on me, are you?” Beau shook his head, looking at his brother Cyrus.

While Cyrus had found love twice in his life, Beau had grasped it once then let it go. Would his life have been different if he’d married Jess and brought her home with him to the Double K? Jessica Sanders was most likely living on Bowdoin Square in Boston as some high society man’s wife by now as her father had planned for her all along. That was water under the bridge—it was too late for what might have been.
