Shadows in the Wall

My husband Shane and I had just moved into my maternal grandparents’ house, which they left for us in their will. The house was over a century old, but it was still in good condition. Being back in that house brought back so many fond memories because I grew up there after losing my parents.

My mom died when I was just eight years old; she was attacked by a wild animal on a camping trip with a few of her friends. My dad didn’t pass away, but he did leave mom and me months before she died. I never learned why.

I was unpacking some of our things upstairs when I heard Shane scream. I rushed down to see what was wrong and noticed the basement door open. When I reached the basement floor, I found Shane sitting down and backed up against the wall. He was looking ahead with wide eyes, and he was trembling.
