What's a wizard to do when the fallen world he lives in demands more and more of him? Michael Hart's decided that he needs to help put things back together again and then find some others to take part of the load off of his shoulders.
Rynn's an old friend, and a wizard like himself. She brought a small group of her students with her when she arrived, fleeing from the riots in the larger cities. Now they're family as far as he's concerned. His real family is there as well, his father and uncle stepping in to help as they can. And if his suspicions are correct, they'll all be in danger if the Council of wizards manages to remove him.
The Council has been rebuffed twice now when they tried to kill him. But they desperately want the crystal mine that he once managed and is now guarding. This time they've decided to overwhelm him with numbers since their attempts to kill him with their troubleshooters both failed.
When Michael discovers that the Council's wizard troops are mind controlled and possibly acting unwillingly, he decides that he needs to free them somehow. Although he fears growing too powerful, he'll need more power than he ever dreamed of having, and secrets will need to be revealed, if his plan is to succeed.
