Whilst Amber has become used to death threats, and having Bastion around her, she is stunned by a violent attack by a fire elemental that not only nearly kills her, but actually causes some injury to Bastion when he tries to protect her. In the process Oscar is severely injured, and Amber has to make up a potion to save his life. Everything hits home for Amber after this attack, she has had to kill someone, Oscar nearly died, and Bastion was hurt. She realises too, that she is developing feelings for Bastion, that she cared about him being hurt.
As Amber is trying to deal with all of this, she gets a call, Aunt Abigay, the Crone, has been targeted by the Black Coven. Aunt Abigay is dying, she has little to no time left, and she is all the way in Edinburgh. Amber is suddenly trapped by responsibility, she has to save Ria, but at the same time, she HAS to get to Abigay.
Worse still, there is a Black Witch running around in her Coven, and now there is another in Edinburgh killing senior members of the Council. The Black Coven seems to be everywhere.
I don’t want to give away spoilers here, but Amber has to make difficult choices, how to save Ria, but still get to Abigay in time to either try and help her, or at least say goodbye. Amber has some powerful allies, Oscar, Bastion, and the witches of not only her Coven, but Kasandra as well. The question becomes if all of these, along with Amber’s skills, will be enough.
Coven of the Witch is somewhat darker than some of the Other series, as the Black Witches start to come out of hiding and show their intentions against the Witches of Light. Ria was an accident, but the strike on the Crone is a calculated attack, as are the continued attacks on Amber. Without Bastion, Amber would most certainly be dead.
Whilst there was discussion and investigation about a Black Witch in book 1, and the Crone as usual was investigating Black Witches, in this book, the Black Coven has truly revealed itself and that they exist not just as a couple of witches, but as a proper Coven throughout England, and that they now mean war on those of the Light.
The character work in this book is brilliant, as we see Amber’s character continue to develop, and we get to understand this fascinating Witch, who has had to overcome different adversities to reach her position, but is now one of the most powerful potion brewers of all witches. Her relationship with Bastion is changing by the day, as she is coming to realise that the person she thought he was, is not that person at all, and he has so many more layers beneath the rock exterior he shows. She is also learning a lot about Griffons too!
This is a stunning sequel to the first Other Witch book, almost better than the first, as the Black Coven comes out of the shadows and strikes hard. Amber must deal with attacks from all directions, at her Coven, herself, and now the Crone, and in trying to defeat these attacks, people are getting hurt, and some will die.
If you have read any of the Other Realm Series – you will love this series as it explores Amber DeLea, and to some extent Bastion – An Absolute MUST READ!

Life in the coven is always busy. From putting out fires (both literal and figurative), engaging with other member races of Other society, and showing she is one bad witch who’s not to be trifled with, Amber’s got her hands full to be sure. But someone(s) is trying to have her killed. Would-be assassins are coming out of the woodwork, making attempt after attempt at her life. This is getting really inconvenient! With her “Oral Potion” done and dusted, patent filed, she should be able to get back to running her Coven and trying to get that coveted spot on the Witches’ Council. Right? RIGHT?! Nope! It seems the Black Coven still has it out for her, and they’re starting to come out of the shadows bit by bit.
Thank the Goddess for Bastion… though he really should put some pants on. It’s distracting!
Between summonings to Edinburgh, the attempts on her life, and Black Witches lurking behind every shadow, what’s a badass Witch to do? Steal a golem of course! Amber’s not about to take any of this lying down, well, not yet at least. With twists and turns to make a cyclone seasick, this next volume in The Other Witch series is one for the books!
Brilliant, well-written, engaging, and fun, this second novel of “The Other Witch” saga continues to bring fans of “The Other Realm” novels something they’ve been needed for ages, an Amber Delea standalone series in gorgeous audio! Beautifully narrated, engaging, and something that simply cannot be put down/put on pause, this book is a must-listen for any Urban Fantasy reader! Enjoy!
