Synopsis

A young woman of gentle birth, Mary Lane Adams lives in reduced circumstances with her widowed sister, Garland, and their father, a retired professor. But when her work for a local interior decorator brings her into contact with the wealthy and dashing Gaines Manning, Mary Lane finds her world turned upside down as she falls deeply in love with her client.

And when Gaines returns Mary Lane’s affections, she gleefully embraces her future despite his family’s reticence. But when Gaines’s estranged wife returns to reclaim her marriage, Mary Lane’s hopes for the future are irretrievably dashed. As she retreats to her ancestral home in the South, and the arms of Vic, the man she left behind, Mary Lane finds that she cannot leave her love for Gaines behind as easily as she left everything else.
