After a run-in with the Guild of Assassins, Rucker discovers that three members of his fellowship — Selwyn, Arabelle, and Shartha — have been abducted and are on their way to be sold into slavery. With Eli and Faylan at his side, Rucker leaves Ardmore’s capital city of Marberry, and sails for Borlyn Island where slavery is quietly but cautiously accepted.
Rucker knows that after slave buyers purchase his friends, it will be all but impossible to track them down.
He swears a personal oath to rescue the missing members of his party. After he finds them, he intends to kill anyone who participated in the abduction of his three friends — even if he has to use the cataclysmic elemental energy of Zaltyn Fire.
While striving to rescue his friends, Rucker and his companions stir up so much trouble on Borlyn Island, they have to flee or face the likelihood of being killed.
And recent complications make escaping the island an even more difficult task — the Quiller army has attacked the western kingdoms, so the Admiral of the Ardmore Navy commandeers all large sailing ships, making long distance travel by ship impossible.
Desperate to avoid capture by Lord Cavender’s sellswords, Rucker’s fellowship must take a very dangerous route out of Dorjon City — one that requires a perilous trek across the Quiller battlefield.
