Rucker and Faylan are alone after the rest of their party mysteriously disappears. Following a deadly battle with a Quiller patrol in a steep-walled, dead-end gorge, Rucker and Faylan find themselves inexplicably separated from their missing companions. Brogan, Eli, Selwyn, Arabelle, and Shartha are nowhere to be found, leaving no indication of what happened to them — they are simply gone, as if by magic. While searching for their missing friends, Rucker and Faylan are forced to fight three magically conjured demons. And during that battle, they learn that Faylan has a magical skill that saves Rucker’s life. Having survived the conflict with the demons, Rucker and his large friend soon have an encounter with an odd being called The Brown Man, someone most people consider a mythical creature that never actually existed. But Rucker and Faylan discover he’s all too real. This ancient being warns Rucker to be wary of Seekers, but doesn’t explain what they are. Days later, as they try to cross the summit of The Spine, Rucker’s party is ambushed and all their magical items are stolen — including Rucker’s magic sword. When they finally learn who took their personal property, they decide to hunt the thieves down and retrieve what was taken from them.
But to achieve that, THE FELLOWSHIP OF TEN must travel to Rhyloer — Land of the Elves.
