A MOMENT IN TIME

Ellen stared at the poster. It hadn’t been there last night when she’d passed the Crane Theatre on her way back from her job at the rope works. She read it carefully. In big, bold black lettering it announced:

A meeting of the Women’s Social & Political Unionwill be held here on Friday 16 April 1909 at 8 p.m.All welcome regardless of class or creed.

It intrigued her, although she really didn’t know why. Of course, she was aware of the suffragettes; she’d seen them marching through the streets of Liverpool with their banners proclaiming ‘Votes for Women’. Her mam didn’t approve of them at all, declaring their behaviour disgraceful – upper-class, educated ladies like that should know better, she sniffed. Yet the poster said all were welcome. Did that include girls like herself who worked in factories? she wondered. It did state ‘regardless of class or creed’.

Ellen walked on, pulling her shawl closer against the chill wind blowing in from the river. Should she just go and see what it was all about, and hear what these ladies had to say? She might learn something. They might possibly have ideas that would improve the existence of girls like herself, for she had to admit that her life at present was drab and dull. A daily routine of long hours, hard work, a pittance of a wage and then the drudgery of helping her mam with household chores and the battle against the dirt and damp of an old and dilapidated house.
