A promising start to a series! Shadow Hunter is quick paced and has lots of interesting characters with a wide array of powers. There are a number of fun twists that keep the story entertaining and will have you flipping the pages anxious to see what happens next. It hooked me so much that I finished it in one sitting.

A laugh riot! Bill is a nerd who gets turned into a vampire, but his master wants him permanently dead. An elder vampire intervenes and places Bill under his protection. The problem is that protection only last 90 days. Bill has a short time to learn the ropes and figure out how to survive.

The book is light-hearted and funny. It is chalked full of great pop culture refences. The characters are interesting and diverse. The pacing and structure of the story is top notch. The interplay between Bill and his vampire mentor, Sally were hysterical.

There are a few cringe worthy moments in the book when Bill and his two friends are discussing women, that in this PC culture, I’m sure will offend some people. This was used sparingly, and it wasn’t enough for me to take a star away from my rating.

I enjoyed the book so much that I finished it in one sitting. The moment I finished I went online to get the next one. Turns out there is a boxed e-book set that has books 1 to 4 in it. Do yourself a favor and just pick-up the box set; it will save you a few bucks and you won’t regret the purchase.

The strength of this novel is its world building. The author does a masterful job of bringing the reader into this supernatural world. Merit’s friends and family have roles in the supernatural community that she was ignorant of before becoming a vampire. The politics and structure of the vampire Houses is deep and rewarding. Never does it become info dumpy. Most times I was anxiously reading pages to find out more details.

My one issue with the book is it brushes up very close to being Paranormal Romance rather than Urban Fantasy, but the author manages to just stay on the Urban Fantasy side of things. I will cross my fingers and hope that the later books in this series also keep being Urban Fantasy. If that is the case, then I have lots of great reading ahead of me.

I might be a Diviner too as I’m predicting I’ll be buying more books in this series. The book has a Jim Butcher/Harry Dresden like feel to it in that it the prose is quick and smooth. There is even a small amusing reference to Harry in the first chapter. While it is similar to Harry Dresden, the author does have his own distinct voice which stops it from feeling like someone trying to write like Jim Butcher.

More wicked fun. I damn near finished this book in one sitting. Samantha makes a great anti-hero and is surrounded by an enjoyable cast of supporting characters.

I gave the first book in the series 4-stars due to her neighbor and love interest, Wyatt being too perfect. At times in this book, he was jealous, stubborn, and whiny. Those flaws appearing really round out his character nicely and make him much more believable. I also really appreciated the character growth in this novel by Samantha.

I’m hooked. I’ll end this review as I’m off to buy the next book in the series.
A wickedly funny main character! This book cost me sleep because I didn’t want to put it down and I just kept lying to myself about ‘just one more chapter’.
