Species Traitor is a work of science fiction with dystopian elements penned by author Kate L. Mary. Taking the theme of alien invasion to new and more serious heights than before, this is a sophisticated novel about racial and cultural tensions that has plenty of action, suspense, and political thrills too. Ava Mendoza is our hero for the tale, and she finds herself already in a quandary because her cousin has married a Veilorian, a member of an invading species that has been banished to the outskirts of society by humankind. When Ava meets Finn, she can’t deny their connection, and so begins her own journey of discovery and defiance as a dangerous new political threat looms on the horizon.
Author Kate L. Mary hits a wonderful balance between the serious side of her thematic content and the action-packed world of sci-fi dystopia, giving readers a hefty dose of both. I loved the development of Ava and her way of thinking, and her relationship with Finn and those around her, human and Veilorian alike, is realistically played despite the alien elements. The political tensions and threats to civil rights hark back to important issues of race and cultural discrimination in our own society, which gives us more reason to back Ava and her choices from our own sense of justice. The work is emotional but also dynamic, with solid world-building and high-quality descriptions that bring the atmosphere to life. Overall, Species Traitor is a highly recommended work that all science fiction fans are sure to adore.
