Synopsis

VANILLA ISLAND

Vanilla Island is an emotionally layered, psychologically intimate novel about two people who begin a daring roleplay relationship — but end up undergoing deep personal transformation and finding genuine love.

Svetlana, or “Mousey,” is a young, quietly intelligent woman with hidden strength beneath her shy exterior. Wounded by past disappointments and stuck in a monotonous job, she impulsively agrees to a contract relationship with Sergei Nikolaev, a powerful businessman known for his cold authority and enigmatic charisma. What starts as a controlled “experiment” — a modern twist on a master–slave dynamic — takes unexpected turns as both characters face their inner vulnerabilities.

Sergei, who presents himself as a “Master,” governs his world with precision. He refers to his darker, dominant side as Shere Khan, a persona he believes shields him from emotional exposure. But Svetlana doesn’t fit into his neat paradigm. Unlike the submissive partners he’s known before, she surprises him — with her wit, her honesty, her deep capacity for trust and tenderness.

Contains explicit sexual scenes, BDSM themes, and mature psychological content. For readers 18+.

Behind the book

One dark, cold winter evening, I finally decided to read that notorious book about fifty shades everyone on the internet kept talking about — just to “touch the treasure trove of world literature,” so to speak, and drink straight from the “source.”

I slogged through it with difficulty and couldn’t help wondering: was the “grey” title accidental? Or maybe it was a kind of “English humour”? Or is it just us here, on the Central Russian Upland, who are somehow different, the “wrong sort” — because it just didn’t click. Not ours. Foreign.

So I thought: why not write something of my own in response. How would it all unfold here, in our own provinces? With more colours than just dreary grey. That idea hooked me. I even came up with a fitting pen name — and off I went.

I took that primitive “grey” plot, gave it some thought, and built it into something like a big goblet. Then I began to fill it: added a dash of personal experience (how could I not!), dripped in some flavour from old (and not-so-old) novels, poured in a good dose of psychology and emotion. I garnished it with humour and sarcasm, sweetened it with vanilla sugar, salted it with a few tears, spiced it with a pinch of BDSM pepper… and yes, I even stuck in the little romantic umbrella — as one must, in cocktails of this sort.

It looked good! I took a sip — and something was missing. Then I dug out a dusty old bottle with a faded label that read LOVE, and I poured in a generous splash.

And suddenly, my cocktail transformed: the bubbles of passion began to sparkle! The characters came alive; their romance took off — so quickly I could barely keep up writing it down!

When I read it over, I realised it wasn’t quite what I’d originally set out to write. In fact, not at all. So what should I call this “drink” of mine? After some thought, I decided on a fairy tale for grown-ups — because grown-ups need their fairy tales, too! After all, as folk wisdom says: “a fairy tale is a lie, but there’s a hint in it — a lesson for good fellows (and young ladies as well).”

Oh, and I should warn you: all explicit scenes in this book are carried out by fictional professionals, who have undergone special training and briefing, under the strict supervision of the author, with full compliance to safety rules. As the saying goes — don’t try this at home! :)
