"It's Going To Be Okay"

I wasn’t ready for this. Hesitating outside the hospital room, I stared at the doctor’s back as he walked away. But I knew what my mother would say. Never give up hope, Leo. No matter how bad things get.

She’d always told the same story. “It was July 20, 2319, at 18:42 hours. A cascade overload breached our engine’s containment shields, and we spun out of control through Jupiter’s thermosphere. Your father, the bravest man I know, went into the engine room to reset the shields. But no man could survive that inferno, and I was left plummeting toward the troposphere alone.”

My mother would pause then and make sure I was paying attention. “Nobody could hear me through the magnetic storm, but I kept calling for help. You must never give up hope, Leo. Because sometimes, the impossible happens.”

Wonder always filled her voice at this part, and I tried so hard to imagine the scene that it fueled my dreams for decades...
