Synopsis
Omnilingual is a sci-fi short story penned by H. Beam Piper. An expedition from Earth discovers a deserted city on the planet Mars, which turns out to be the remnants of a developed culture that perished 50,000 years ago. The human scientists salvage books and records left behind and are perplexed by their contents. Young archaeologist Martha Dane translates a few words... The work is exceptional, in focusing on the problem of archaeology on an alien culture.
