Synopsis

William Lindsay Gresham's novel is a dark jewel, a classic American tale about the dream of redemption-a dream that is only a nightmare in disguise. In 1940s New York, young Stan Carlisle vows to get to the top. And since Stan is clever, ambitious and not without a useful streak of ruthlessness, soon enough he's going places. From hustlers to Machiavellian femme fatales, Stan revels in the dark world of show business. It appears that the world is at his feet, but not everything is as it seems. Nightmare Alley is Gresham's first and best-known work. The novel most admired by noir fiction fans was adapted into a hit film in 1947 starring Tyrone Power.
