The Beard of the Prophet Archeologist Reuben Hayles, following written warnings that his life’s in imminent danger, has asked for police protection in his home. Superintendent Budd has stationed himself outside the door of his room, while Sergeant Leek remains on alert right outside the room’s only external window. Neither police officer sees, or hears, any intruder. Yet Hayles is found dead, his face and head battered by some tremendous blow. But apart from the corpse the room is empty, devoid of any murder weapon—so the blow couldn’t have been self-inflicted! A search reveals no hidden panels, so how has the man been killed?
