A religious studies student at Oxford, she searches for answers for what happened to her between the pages of ancient texts. Benedict Martin is the son of a monster. Attempting to distance himself from his father, he makes a life for himself in London. When the past comes back to haunt him in the form of Evelyn Snow, he knows he should push her away, keep her safe—but he can't help but admire her for her courage, her resilience. Instead, he invites her to join him in the darkness.
They are connected by the one man they're both trying to forget, and as Evelyn tries to deny the red hot connection between them, she realizes that maybe vices are better than virtues. After all, monsters can be born—or they can be honed.
