Synopsis

Featuring treasured classics, volumes of essential writings, major translations of great works from around the globe, and rediscoveries of literary and historical merit, the Modern Library was founded in 1917 by the publishers Boni and Liveright and eight years later was acquired by Bennett Cerf and Donald Klopfer. It provided the foundation for their next publishing venture, Random House.

Now perhaps best known for its “100 Best” lists of novels and nonfiction of the twentieth century, the Modern Library’s distinctive, affordable, and highly-collected editions have played a significant role in American cultural life for decades.
