Three years ago, Zoe was on track to earn a basketball scholarship and graduate with honors when her parents died in a sudden and tragic car accident. Orphaned with her two younger brothers, Zoe dropped out of high school and got a full-time job to help support her now-displaced family. Living with a sick aunt, working grueling hours at a diner, and trying to keep her younger brothers from the harsh realities of their situation as much as possible, Zoe gave up on her one true dream: basketball.

But over the last three years, there has been an escape in the form of one-on-one games with the mysterious street ballplayer known as Chase. Chase is as equally sharp-toothed as she is deadly on the court. Her cards aren't just played close to her chest, they're hidden in her sleeves. For three years, Chase has been secretly training Zoe for a new kind of basketball tournament called the "midnight games": a fast-paced, physics-breaking game of basketball where the players bet time instead of money.
