One day, I received a large manila envelope with papers detailing some property left vacant by a great aunt of mine I had never heard about. I was, according to the sender, her “sole beneficiary.” She had died in the 1970s in Lima, Peru; we were in 2012, and I was in New York City. For forty years, two apartments, furniture, things... documents detailing her life, perhaps, had been left unoccupied, unused, and unread in a capital of South America. Señorita Rosa Roussetzki had no other descendant alive, no family anywhere except for me, Rémy Roussetzki.
