Watch for
Caught Off His Mark
Longarm glanced at the girl standing wet and naked behind him and motioned her under the bed. She grabbed a towel and, quickly wrapping it around herself, got down on her hands and knees and scrambled out of sight beneath the sagging mattress and overhanging quilt.
Breathing shallowly, Longarm gained his feet.
The floorboards vibrated as, out in the hall, the three men sauntered toward Longarm’s room. The drink-thick banter resonated off the walls.
Longarm pressed his back against the wall left of the door and held the Winchester at port, thumbing back the hammer and snugging his finger against the trigger. He followed the men by their voices and footsteps, until they were directly between his door and the door of Room Nine.
The smell of sweaty, dusty bodies, leather, liquor, and horses tainted the air.
Longarm stiffened, held his breath, waiting.
