Synopsis
Travel to Mars, known by its inhabitants as Barsoom, in books seven through eleven of Edgar Rice Burroughs's classic science fiction series. In A Fighting Man of Mars, Hastor, a poor padwar, must rescue his love, the beautiful Sanoma Tora, who has been kidnapped. John Carter returns as the hero in Swords of Mars and wages war against the Guild of Assassins led by Ur Jan, who have kidnapped Carter’s wife, Dejah Thoris. Synthetic Men of Mars introduces a new hero, Vor Daj, a member of John Carter’s personal guard, and brings back The Master Mind of Mars’s evil scientist Ras Thavas. Llana of Gathol is a collection of four stories revolving around John Carter’s granddaughter, Llana of Gathol. Skeleton Men of Jupiter is the last of the Barsoom series to be written by Burroughs.
Edgar Rice Burroughs’s Barsoom series helped define the science fiction genre and inspired many well-known sci-fi writers including Ray Bradbury and Arthur C. Clarke. The books have been adapted for film and comic strips.
