It was the homecoming Edie knew to expect: a mound of post on the doormat, a stale smell in the air, plants drooping in the sink and an empty fridge. It was a far cry from the hotels her bank had put her up in during her latest Asian tour. Almost two months away, over 30 presentations made, significant business attained. All in all, the trip had been a success, and she could expect a decent bonus. But her bank balance’s gain was her private life’s loss. How could Edie ever hope to maintain a relationship when she was continually on the road?
She went to run a shower and remembered that the water would be cold. Resetting the timer, she resolved to find someone – anyone– who could keep an eye on the place in her absence. Turn the water-heater on, stock the fridge up with basics, deal with the post, water the plants. Maybe it was time to befriend the old lady who lived upstairs? The few times they’d met she hadn’t exactly seemed that friendly – far from it, in fact – but if approached carefully, she mightn’t mind doing a few things around the place in exchange for a cash boost to her pension.
Drawing the bedroom curtains closed, Edie resolved to make contact with her neighbour. She’d get past that grumpily set face somehow – she always did like a challenge. It could be a win-win situation.
