Synopsis

Ernest Hemingway’s The Garden of Eden became a best-seller when published posthumously in 1986. Hemingway began the novel in 1946, and many believe he meant it to be his last masterpiece. His straightforward prose shines through in this story of a doomed love triangle.
Young author David Bourne and his new wife Catherine are blissfully honeymooning in the 1920s COte d’Azur. Jealous of David’s writing, Catherine hopes the trip will awaken new passions in her husband. But as the two Amercans abroad enjoy carefully prepared Tom Collinses and good absinthe, David struggles to reclaim his manhood. Catherine becomes increasingly vindictive and conniving, obsessed with a dangerously erotic game.
Catherine is often considered Hemingway’s only truly strong female character, and many scholars wonder whether relatively weak David Bourne may be representative of the real Hemingway.
