This book is dedicated to all my family,
Eddie and Deb, Rich and Lisa,
Ann-Margret and Mike,
with a special tip of the hat to
my son-in-law Mike Rzyski,
who pointed me in the right direction
when I was floundering. Thanks, Mike.
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
As I’ve said before but it’s so important
that I’ll say it again—I could not have written
this book without the aid of two people—
my husband, Ed, and my editor, Sandra Harding.
They are always there when I need them.
Thank you both from the bottom
of my heart and my inkwell.
VISITORS TO SEVILLE, INDIANA
Chapter one
Biddy McFarland peeked through the lace panels covering the side parlor’s curved, ceiling-to-floor windows that provided her with an excellent view of the house next door. The house was owned and occupied by Edith Semple, an elderly spinster. The Semple manse, like the McFarland manse, was Victorian in style and constructed during the 1890s building boom that occurred in our small central Indiana town of Seville.
Almost all the houses in Seville, regardless of age, have been the recipients of tender, loving care with very few exceptions, the most glaring one being the Semple manse. The crumbling old Victorian looked like something out of an early Hollywood horror flick.
We hope you are enjoying the book so far. To continue reading...
