Zane placed a foot on the carpet and the revolving door swished her in. ‘The Virtual Emporium – Where Dreams Come True’ – the premiere department store in the galaxy. Tweaking a muscle in her brow, her solar contact lenses zoomed in on the Department map. Ahhh, there it was. Third Floor – Reality Earth.

Zane stepped politely aside to allow a pregnant Squarjian female to waddle into the Matter Uploader. She would wait until she could go alone. Recent reports of faulty Matter Uploaders merging passengers were too scary. The last thing a girl looking for the perfect virtual boyfriend needed was nine breasts and a proboscic vagina, thank you very much.

Zane adored Reality Earth. It was light years since she’d stepped foot on her own planet and those holograms of waterfalls and single sunsets brought it all back. Not that she wasn’t happy stationed here on Venus. A fantastic job as a space pilot had brought her all this way, and falling for Todd had made her stay. Since the bust-up with Todd, she’d contemplated going back to Earth. But Venus had its own virtues: hot all year from being closer to the sun and, with virtually zero rainfall, the climate was heavenly. Her Venusian colleagues had laughed liked hyenas when she showed them an umbrella. What’s more, on a volcanic planet you could get cosmetic lava baths, guaranteed to stop 50 per cent of wrinkles in their tracks. B. . .
