Excerpt:

I plugged in my thumb drive and turned up the volume. Deep
pings reverberated so loudly I gripped the steering wheel with both hands. The girls took their noses from their comic books long enough to lean forward and frown.

“What's that noise?” Angie asked.

If I hadn't known better, I might have guessed a chorus of car alarms. “Carillon music.”

The metal clangs hit a higher register and tinkered through the air in quick spurts.

“I believe we are hearing metal bells,” said Sompong. “Is that right?”

Stella rummaged around for her earphones. “They sound a little out of tune.”

They were bells, all right. Sixty-seven of them.
