The first time I heard it, I didn’t know what it was.

If I’d been upright, I’d have collapsed into the nearest chair. Or straight to the floor perhaps – I was trembling that much. But the first time it happened I was already lying down. It was the middle of the afternoon; a weekday. There was no television on and no radio. No laptop out, no book open.

I was lying on the sofa, half under a blanket, half out of it. Half awake, half asleep.

And then it happened.

My eyes snapped open and I jolted upright. Sweat broke out at my hairline and under my arms; my pulse thudded in my ears. For a few seconds I stayed like that, heart hammering, then slowly, I lowered myself back down. Slid my hands under the blanket and under my thighs; pressed my palms flat to the sofa and gripped . . .
