Chapter 1

NOW

Every part of the house creaks—the floorboards, the ceiling above me. It’s the creaks that confuse me, make me unsure that what I’m hearing is right—but it is. I know it is.

The door moves slowly. Someone’s trying to get inside the house. I don’t know what they want—money, possessions, or worse, me?

I clutch the gun tighter. The metal is cold against my flesh, a dead thing that stings my skin.

Aiming it is easier than I ever imagined. It looks heavy, but the balance is surprisingly good.

The door slides open. The moon slashes ribs of light from the blinds onto the floor.

It occurs to me to call out to the intruder. But I want this over with, done. For too long they’ve been free, hurting others.

It’s time for this to end.

I lift the gun, aiming. I thumb off the safety and squeeze the trigger slightly.

A pair of eyes and a curtain of silky hair come into view. I recognize both instantly. I know them like the back of my hand.

She gasps and her eyelids flare. The movement takes me by surprise, and I pull the trigger. The gun explodes with the sights set directly on her face.
